Underworld is the comedy crime thriller released in 1996 by director Roger Christian. It was billed with the underscored subtitle, sometimes revenge is the best therapy. This truly describes the madness that ensues throughout the motion picture. In many ways, Underworld keeps the audience guessing about what will happen next and still delivers a plot that is wildly funny.

Underworld owes much to the storyline, as written by Larry Bishop. It follows Denis Leary in the role of Johnny Crown, aka Johnny Alt, who is freshly released from a prison sentence now served. The trip to prison made Johnny late for an important business meeting, seven years late to be precise. He also has plans to deal with some unfinished business beforehand, specifically hunting down everyone involved or responsible for the death of his father. This is a list of people that is going to take Johnny some very interesting places, but that is just the way Johnny Alt rolls.

The supporting cast of Joe Mantegna and Annabella Sciorra is just the kind of friends Johnny wants but are not always good for him. Still, they are the only ones who are willing to go along with this crazy wild ride down memory lane with Johnny.

Underworld received an R rating due to the use of hardcore language and a number of violent scenes, so it is a film more suited for adult viewing. It also has some graphic sexuality but is not a typically risqué movie, just straight forward about such taboos for a comedy film. Overall, Underworld is an exciting and racy ride into the world of its characters.
