Vanity Fair, Mira Nair's 2004 adaptation of the William Makepeace Thackeray novel of the same name, stars Reese Witherspoon, Jonathan Ryhs Meyers, Gabriel Byrne, Bob Hoskins, and James Purefoy. Reese Witherspoon plays Becky Sharp, an ambitious heroine who has to climb her way up in British society during the early 1800s. At this point in time, Great Britain followed a strict class system that was almost impossible to penetrate, but driven by ambition, Becky Sharp, born to poor parents and then left an orphan, struggles to find a way to alter her social status. Her attempt to change her social status includes befriending a wealthy mentor and marrying for money. However, marrying for money is not as easy as it might first appear. Becky's journey is filled with both heartbreak and triumph. Because Becky is driven to obtain the ultimate goal of wealth and security above all else, she often works against herself in matters of the heart.
