Virumbugiren is a 2002 Tamil drama film directed by Susi Ganeshan and starring Prashanth, Sneha, and Nassar. The film sheds light on the caste system and the societal issues that continue to plague India. The story revolves around the lives of a young man named Shanmugam (Prashanth) and a young woman named Charulatha (Sneha) who hail from different castes and fall in love.

Shanmugam is a carefree young man from a lower caste who lives with his mother and sister in a small village. He dreams of becoming a police officer and is on the lookout for a job when he meets Charulatha, a Brahmin girl who is studying medicine in Chennai. They meet by chance and fall in love despite the societal norms that dictate they should not be together. Shanmugam is besotted with Charulatha and starts to work harder towards his goal of becoming a police officer so he can provide for her.

However, Charulatha's family is against their relationship and does not approve of Shanmugam because of his caste. They see him as someone who is not suitable for their daughter and try to separate them. Charulatha's father, played by Nassar, is a wealthy businessman who has a lot of influence in the village. He is a firm believer in the caste system and wants to maintain the status quo even if it means going against his own daughter's wishes.

The couple's love story takes a turn when Charulatha is sent away to Singapore for her medical studies. Shanmugam tries his best to stay in touch with her but is unable to due to the high cost of international calls. He writes letters to her and eagerly waits for her response. However, when Charulatha returns from Singapore, things are not the same. She has changed and is no longer the same person he fell in love with.

Throughout the film, Susi Ganeshan highlights the caste system and how it continues to breed injustices even in modern-day India. The film's climax highlights the consequences of the entrenched caste system, as Shanmugam bravely tries to stand up for what he believes is right.

The film is aided by a strong performance from Prashanth, who brilliantly captures the innocence and charm of his character. Sneha also shines in her role and delivers a measured performance. Nassar's character is complex, and he handles the nuances of his character with ease. The music by Deva is melodious and captures the mood of the film impeccably.

In terms of cinematography, the film benefits from the stunning visuals of Tamil Nadu, which add to the film's authenticity. Susi Ganeshan's direction is noteworthy, and he manages to convey the message of the film without being preachy or didactic.

Overall, Virumbugiren is a well-made film that touches on the pressing societal issues in India. The film's central message of love triumphing over the caste system is heart-warming, and the film is a must-watch for anyone interested in Tamil cinema.
