Voodoo Dawn, a supernatural thriller movie from 1990, revolves around a man named Alex (Raymond St. Jacques) who possesses the power of voodoo. Alex is a well-known musician who, after his mother's sudden death, starts performing rituals that awaken spirits and energies beyond his control. He seeks comfort in another musician and voodoo priestess, LaMour (Theresa Merritt), who assists him with his rituals and helps him unleash his full potential. But with bigger power comes bigger challenges, and the two are forced to face the underworld and fight off the dark spirits that Alex's rituals have invoked.

The story begins with Alex living in New York City and performing music with his band, Voodoo Dawn. Alex is a deeply spiritual man and believes that music has the power to evoke spirits and energies. One night, while performing a ritual, his mother dies mysteriously. Alex is devastated and decides to leave the band and the city. He moves to New Orleans, where he believes he can delve deeper into his voodoo roots and become a more powerful spiritual performer.

In New Orleans, Alex quickly meets LaMour, a voodoo priestess and musician with whom he forms a deep bond. Together, they perform a powerful ritual that awakens a dark spirit - Baron Samedi, the spirit of death. Alex and LaMour sense the danger and attempt to reverse the ritual, but it's too late. Baron Samedi has been awakened, and he's angry.

As the story progresses, Alex and LaMour encounter more spirits and realize the true extent of Alex's powers. They discover that Alex's rituals have drawn the attention of the underworld, and they must fight off vengeful spirits to protect themselves and their loved ones. Along the way, they meet a young woman named LuAnn (Gina Gershon), who becomes involved in their fight against the dark spirits. Her connection to Alex is mysterious and takes an unexpected turn as the story unfolds.

The movie is heavily steeped in voodoo lore and mythology, and the performances from the main cast are fantastic. Raymond St. Jacques delivers a strong performance as Alex, whose struggles are both internal and external. Theresa Merritt brings depth and mysticism to LaMour, the wise and powerful voodoo priestess. Gina Gershon gives a solid performance as the entrancing LuAnn, and her character's progression adds a touch of unpredictability to the story.

The horror elements of the movie are well-executed but not overdone, relying more on atmosphere and tension than pure gore. The supernatural scenes are both thrilling and eerie, and the cinematography captures the essence of New Orleans' unique and mystic vibes. The soundtrack is also an essential element of the movie, with original music featuring throughout the film.

Voodoo Dawn is a unique and captivating thriller that blends voodoo mythology with supernatural horror. The performances, visuals, and music make for a compelling watch that will leave you both entranced and on edge. If you're a fan of horror movies that go beyond the traditional tropes and delve into the world of the supernatural, then Voodoo Dawn is a must-see.
