A young Sandra Bullock plays Lucy, a ticket puncher at the subway station in New York, in this 1995 romance. Peter Callaghan (played by Peter Gallagher) comes to her ticket booth every day. Peter is an upper class, wealthy, handsome socialite who even though never notices Lucy, Lucy is in love from afar with Peter. One day, Peter comes through her ticket booth and gets into an altercation and falls on the train platform as an express train is coming at him. Lucy leaps out of her ticket booth and saves him.
In the hospital, where Peter lays in a coma, Lucy is mistaken as Peter's fiance, which the hospital then informs his family. The Callaghans welcome Lucy as one of their own during the Christmas season. As time goes on, Lucy spends more time with Jack, Peter's more rustic, down-to-earth, and empathetic brother (played by Bill Pullman).
