Anime & Manga Movies Online
Anime is a style of animation that originated in Japan but that has gained world-wide popularity in the last several decades. The distinctive contemporary anime style has its roots in the 1960s, when a few Japanese artists who drew manga-a Japanese still-image comic tradition-began to adapt their stories for animation to be used in film and television productions. Anime styles and stories began to be noticed outside Japan in the 1980s, and by the beginning of the twenty-first century, anime was one of the most popular styles of animation around the globe.
The earliest anime productions borrowed heavily from American animations, which, thanks to the success of the films produced by Walt Disney Studios in the first half of the twentieth century, represented the global standard for high-quality animation. Japanese artists quickly developed their own styles, however, and the typical anime style diverged from the American style; while American animation tried to achieve fluid and realistic motion, Japanese anime was more concerned with the quality of individual images and often sacrificed fluid motion for image quality.
The typical contemporary anime style is distinctive. Characters often are drawn with exaggerated body proportions and large eyes, and they communicate emotions and reactions with a stylized set of gestures that is relatively consistent from film to film. The popularity of anime has led studios outside Japan to mimic the style as well.
Anime also tends to focus on different subject matter than American animation. Anime stories have historically explored Japanese history, folklore, mythology and literature, and contemporary anime often dwells in the genres of fantasy, science fiction and adventure. Also unlike American animation, anime is less likely to be aimed at young audiences; some anime films are intended for children, but many films contain violence, sexual situations and thematic elements that are more suitable for mature audiences.
