Science Fiction & Fantasy Movies Online
Science fiction and fantasy films, without exception, take place in a world that is different from the everyday world in which their viewers live. Science fiction films are usually set in a world that is, while not in line with present reality, at least theoretically plausible. Fantasy films, on the other hand, step away from the plausible and enter into realms of pure imagination. Science fiction, as the name of the genre implies, tries to maintain some contact with actual science, while fantasy doesn't hesitate to introduce magic and the supernatural into the plot.
Although not all science fiction involves travel to other worlds, the genre has historically been defined by those films that are concerned with space travel. Journeys to other worlds and galaxies, encounters with extraterrestrial beings, and struggles with futuristic technologies provide the narrative conflicts within typical science fiction films. Other science fiction films deal with the moral and ethical implications of advanced technologies here on Earth. The science fiction films of the 1950s and 1960s combined elements of both of these strains of the genre, examining how humanity's misuse of technology could draw it into conflict with powerful extraterrestrial forces.
Fantasy films generally don't care whether or not their plots seem reasonable. Ghosts, monsters, witches, magicians, fairies and myriad other imaginary creatures appear in fantasy films, and credible technology is usually much less of a concern than it is in science fiction films. The prevalence of magic and monsters in fantasy films blurs the boundary between this genre and the horror genre, but fantasy films are much less focused on fright. Fantasy films are often a fanciful twist on other, more mainstream, genres; wizardry-themed epics are merely magical adventure films, for example, and modern vampire romances are typical romantic dramas with supernatural creatures thrown into the mix.
