Det. Stabler Won't Exit 'SVU' Precinct Door Feet-First
If ADAs Alexandra Cabot and Casey Novak have proven absolutely nothing else during the past 12 “Law & Order: SVU” seasons, it’s that NYPD doors apparently close, but rarely lock.
That principle alone tells me never to say “never” to Christopher Meloni maybe one day gracing the Manhattan Special Victims Unit squad room again. After all, NBC boss Robert Greenblatt told TVLine recently that though his departure might be a tad mundane, Det. Elliot Stabler will indeed end his SVU tenure on his feet, not on a gurney.
“I think you should just watch and see,” Greenblatt said, preemptively killing any chatter that Stabler might die in the line of duty. “It’s not a big shocking mystery.”
Though the main cast additions of Danny Pino (“Cold Case”) and Kelli Giddish (“The Good Wife”) will fill Meloni’s void when the show’s 13th season kicks off this fall, there will still be other transitions to consider. Stabler’s long-time partner Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) will appear in all 22 episodes, though rumors have persisted that Hargitay may take on a more part-time role as her character moves into a supervisory capacity.
“That remains to be seen,” Greenblatt said. “That’s something we talked about, and I don’t know if that’s actually where it’s going to go in the latter half of the season yet. But that could happen.”
