Mark Burnett and NBC Teaming Up For American Idol Competitor 'The Voice of America'
Mark Burnett, the reality show genius behind Survivor and The Apprentice is set to launch another show in the future. The Voice of America, he hopes, will compete and beat American Idol in the future. He is hoping to capitalize on Idol’s falling viewership numbers and major shakeup at the judges table. He is banking on the fact that the judges won’t be as well liked as past ones and viewers will be looking for something hotter and newer to watch.
The new show is going to be broadcast on the NBC network. From the Hollywood Reporter:
NBC isn't wasting any time putting its version -- titled The Voice of America -- on the air. In a very aggressive move, the show will premiere this spring -- getting the jump on X Factor (which launches next fall) and potentially even facing Idol head to head.
Do you think we can stomach through another reality series? How many great singers are left in the country still? Didn’t they already all try out for American Idol? Or did they only pick up the young, hot voices of America and leave the older talent still available for pickup on a new series?
Just look at Susan Boyle, from the UK’s X Factor. She certainly wasn’t young or hot, but she had a set of pipes on her. Do you think Simon Cowell would have given her a chance at the auditions for Idol even? Probably not. But look where she is now.
Can Burnett’s new show score a hit like Boyle? He certainly hopes so, since he is putting his name behind the effort.
