Ready for 'Dinosaurs Versus Aliens'?

Ready for 'Dinosaurs Versus Aliens'? Oh yes, you read that right. First we went through a massive cycle of alien invasion films. Then the aliens invaded and we stuck them in segregated neighborhoods. Soon the aliens will fight cowboys. Not one to be outdone, Grant Morrison now wants the aliens to fight...dinosaurs.

Deadline is reporting that the crazy comic book writer will team with director Barry Sonnenfeld for "Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens." In what will surely be the most expensive movie ever made, the film (and graphic novel; Morrison will provide scripting duties for both) will tell the story of a "secret prehistoric battle" in which aliens invade, and the planet's only hope is a secret race of super-intelligent dinosaurs.

The comic book will actually be out later this year from Liquid Comics, so presumably the idea for that came first and Sonnenfeld lept on it faster than a velociraptor onto a UFO.

"Growing up," Sonnenfeld told Deadline, "my fascination was all things dinosaur, and as an adult, I've had some success making films about aliens, so this is a dream come true."

Sonnenfeld is referring to his success with the "Men in Black" franchise. The first film was a huge commerical success, and while you have to remind people the second even existed, it still brought in over $400 million worldwide. "Men in Black III" is in production, and many accounts have it going poorly (reportedly, the script wasn't finished before shooting). If "Cowboys & Aliens" is half the success its baiting title would suggest it will be, Sonnenfeld should have no trouble getting back on top by throwing dinosaurs into the alien formula.

These two films alone open up whole worlds of possibilities. I mean, it's about time someone told the story of how the aliens built the pyramids in "Egyptians Versus Aliens: Enslavement! 3-D!"
