More Tales of 'An Idiot': HBO's 'The Ricky Gervais Show' Is Renewed
He may be banned from the Golden Globes, but comedian Ricky Gervais is still well-loved by HBO.
"The Ricky Gervais Show," an experimental animated affair created by Gervais and his producer-pal Stephen Merchant, has been renewed by HBO for a third season.
For those who haven't seen the show, here's the skinny: Gervais has had a very popular podcast for a number of years now (since 2005, in fact...Gervais is often credited with pioneering the modern podcast format), and the audio from that podcast makes up the content of "The Ricky Gervais Show." Of course, it would be pretty boring to listen to the audio and just watch a blank screen, so the podcast audio has been set to whimsical animated sequences illustrating the conversation at hand.
The result is a collection of some of the best clips from the podcast, which features conversations between Gervais, Merchant, and their surprisingly funny co-star Karl Pilkington. Pilkington is the true star of the show, as his incredibly odd view of the world leads to some of the strangest comments you've ever heard. That's the nice way of putting it, of course: Gervais just calls him an idiot. In fact, Pilkington has gone on to star in his own show, "An Idiot Abroad," which airs on the Science Channel.
