Detective Inspector Frost is back with his unconventional and yet effective approach to solving crimes in the quiet town of Denton. In the second episode of season 2, titled "Widows and Orphans," the detective is faced with the murder of a young girl, whose body has been found on the bank of a river. As Frost begins his investigation, he uncovers secrets and lies within the town, revealing a web of deceit that ultimately leads him to the truth.

Frost is initially called to the scene of the crime by a group of children who discover the body while out fishing. Frost is quick to realize that the victim was a young girl called Julie, who was working as a nanny for a wealthy couple in the area. He is soon introduced to the couple, Bernard and Helen Pinnock, who are both grief-stricken by the news of Julie's death.

Frost immediately becomes suspicious of Bernard Pinnock, who appears to be too calm and collected for someone who has just lost their nanny. Pinnock, who is a well-known businessman and philanthropist in the town, appears to be hiding something from Frost. However, when Pinnock is questioned, he claims that he was away on business at the time of the murder.

As Frost begins to delve deeper into Julie's past, he discovers that she had a difficult childhood and was forced to leave her family home after her mother died. Frost soon realizes that the young girl's life had been plagued by tragedy, and that she had been forced to fend for herself.

Frost becomes increasingly frustrated with the case, as the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into place too easily. However, when a second body is discovered, the detective realizes that he is dealing with a much more complex case than he initially thought.

The second victim is revealed to be a local solicitor, who had been working on the wills of both Bernard Pinnock and a wealthy widow in the area, Mrs. Somers. Frost soon realizes that the two cases are connected, and that the murderer is using the deaths of both victims as a way to benefit financially.

Throughout the episode, Frost must navigate through the complexities of the case, while also dealing with the personal issues in his own life. The detective is also struggling with his daughter's pregnancy, which he is finding difficult to come to terms with. Frost's relationship with his superior officer, Superintendent Mullett, also comes under strain, as the two disagree on how to handle the case.

As the case comes to a conclusion, Frost is left to battle with his own demons, while also trying to bring the murderer to justice. With its gripping storyline and engaging characters, "Widows and Orphans" is a must-watch episode for anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery.
