AERIAL AMERICA is a documentary series on Smithsonian Channel that explores America from a bird's eye view. In season 1 episode 8, we're taken on a journey over the smallest state in America, Rhode Island.

In the episode, we start by flying over the state's capital, Providence, marveling at the picturesque cityscape from above. We then move on to explore the iconic Newport Mansions on the coast, that were once houses to the wealthiest families in America, built during the Gilded Age.

Next, we venture to the seaside town of Narragansett, where we see the beauty of the Rhode Island beachfront and the famous Point Judith Lighthouse. Further along our journey, we are treated to some stunning aerial shots of the state's natural beauty, from the dense green forests covering many parts of the state, to the beautiful Beavertail Lighthouse that serves as a beacon to sailors entering the Narragansett Bay.

We also get a glimpse of the areas known as Block Island and Little Compton, known for their unique charm and New England character, making them an attraction for tourists seeking a quieter coastal getaway. Our journey also takes us to the town of Westerly, where the Watch Hill Lighthouse stands as a symbol of representing the state's passion for its rich maritime history.

As we fly over the state, we get to see how Rhode Island's bustling industrial past has shaped its modern identity. The Quonset industrial complex, which is home to Innovation center for Marine Technologies, is now an innovative hub for innovation, marine research, and development.

In the second half of the episode, AERIAL AMERICA takes us to the famous Ivy League school, Brown University, situated in the heart of Providence. We see its stately architecture and impressive campus, including the Rhode Island School of Design, or RISD, one of the leading art and design schools in the country.

Lastly, we fly over the area referred to as the "Blackstone Valley," where we can witness the iconic Slater Mill Historic Site. It's known for its contribution to the American Industrial Revolution as it displays the first indoor water-powered textile mill from the 18th century.

Overall, AERIAL AMERICA's take on Rhode Island gives viewers a glimpse into the state's varied identity, from its scenic beaches and forests to the impressive historic architecture and bustling innovation centers. It's an excellent overview of what makes this state so unique and special.
