Ep 3. Escorter Service

In season 4 episode 3 of American Restoration titled Escorter Service, Rick Dale and his team take on a unique restoration project for a vintage coin-operated escort service ride. The client, a collector named Bob, has found the dilapidated piece of history and hopes that Rick can bring it back to life.

The escort service ride was a common sight in grocery stores and small retail shops during the 1950s and 1960s. It was essentially a kiddie ride in the shape of a car that simulated a ride in a taxi cab, complete with a coin-operated meter and a voice recording that talked to the child rider.

When the ride arrives at Rick's shop, it is clear that it has seen better days. The metal body is rusty and the interior is completely destroyed. The team begins by taking the ride apart, carefully cataloging every piece so that they can put it back together correctly. They then focus on stripping away the rust and repairing the dents and dings in the metal body.

The team faces some challenges during the restoration process, such as recreating the intricate metalwork on the top of the ride. They use a combination of welding and metal-forming techniques to create a detailed replica of the original design. They also have to repair and replace the various electrical components that make the ride function properly. Despite the obstacles, the team perseveres and creates a stunning final product.

Throughout the restoration process, Bob stops by the shop to see the progress on his cherished piece. He is thrilled with the attention to detail and the hard work that Rick and his team put into the restoration. The team even adds a few personal touches, such as a custom paint job that honors Bob's military service.

In addition to the escort service ride, Rick and his team also work on a few other unique pieces in this episode. They restore a vintage popcorn machine that was used on a 1960s movie set and a 1950s toy electric train that belonged to one of the shop employees.
