Baker Kim Tak Goo is a Korean drama series that turns the story of a simple baker into an exciting adventure. The show tells the life story of the main character, Kim Tak Goo. Kim is the illegitimate child of a baker and his mistress. This makes life hard for Kim because the baker's true wife refuses to accept him as her husband's son. In addition, Kim's half brother carries a deep resentment for him.

Life becomes even more complicated for Kim when his real mother is kidnapped. Kim sets out on a journey to find her. Instead of finding his mother, though, Kim finds a new way of life. In one town, Kim encounters the famous baker, now running a school, who taught his own father how to make delicious confections. In this town Kim also hears that his mother has died. Thinking that there is no longer any need to search for his mother, Kim decides to stay on at the school and learn the art of baking. Soon, he is determined to become the country's top baker.

Things are not as simple as Kim imagined, however. Kim's younger half brother, Majun, is also studying at the baking school. Kim, the older brother, is the heir to the family business, but Majun wants this honor for himself. For this reason he is determined to keep Kim's whereabouts a secret from his father. Meanwhile, the boys' father has been desperately looking for Kim. He hopes to bring him safely home. However, Kim's stepmother is working hard behind the scenes to discredit Kim and put her son Majun in Kim's place.

As the series progresses, family secrets are revealed as different members plot against each other. Each person simply wants to find their own happiness, but the ways people go about this are often surprising. Love and loyalty are tested as hidden plots emerge and ties are cut.
