Being Mary Jane is a drama series that shows the daily struggles and the personal life of the successful news anchor Mary Jane Paul. The third season highlights a change in Mary Jane's life as she starts a new chapter in her career and personal life. Episode 4 of the third season, Being Kara, brings the focus to MJ's best friend, Kara Lynch.

The episode starts with Kara in a business meeting with a group of white men who are all her superiors in the newsroom. As the only black woman in the room, she feels unheard and unseen. The meeting ends with her work being discredited and dismissed, much to her frustration. She leaves work feeling defeated and ready to give up on her dreams of becoming the next executive producer. Later that night, she confides in Mary Jane about her work issues. Mary Jane gives Kara advice, urging her to keep pushing and stay aggressive with her opinions. However, Kara remains discouraged.

Meanwhile, Patrick, Kara's boyfriend, is preparing to ask her to move in together. He talks to MJ about his plans and assures her that he is going to pop the question. Mary Jane cautions him against moving too fast, but Patrick decides to follow his heart and goes through with the proposal. Kara accepts, but she feels Patrick doesn't truly understand her goals and ambitions.

As MJ and Kara return to work the next day, Kara feels ignored and put down by her colleagues. She is asked to fetch coffee and lunch, even though she is an executive producer. She struggles to stay quiet and calm, but Mary Jane urges her to speak up and fight for herself. Kara decides to do just that and gives a powerful speech that asserts her worth and knowledge in the newsroom.

Throughout the episode, Kara also struggles with her identity as a black woman in the newsroom. She feels that her opinions are never taken seriously because of her race and gender. To further complicate things, her boss decides to promote a young white man over her, despite her being more qualified and experienced. This only adds fuel to her frustration and feelings of being undervalued.

The episode takes a deeper look at the struggles that black women, both in the newsroom and outside of it, face in society. It highlights the importance of having a support system and the strength to stand up for oneself. It also shows the importance of the black community coming together and supporting each other in the face of adversity.

Overall, Being Kara is an emotional and powerful episode that brings attention to the ongoing struggles that black women face in the workplace. It shows that even the most successful and talented women still face discrimination and biases in their career pursuits. The episode ends on a hopeful note, with Kara feeling more empowered to fight for herself and her dreams.
