Watch Black Dynamite

Black Dynamite is, at it's core, a comedy. However, the exact nature of the comedy can be deceptive. When taken at face value one might perceive it as essentially crude humor for the sake of crude humor. The muscle bound titular character, Black Dynamite, travels both city and globe to pursue fights for various reasons. Along the way he and a cast of eccentric companions trade any number of quips and jokes.

However, there's far more to the show than these surface trappings. Black Dynamite is both satire and critique of any number of different genres and franchises. Characters who might seem to be a one note joke at one point will often later turn out to actually be deconstructions of popular or often used dramatic tropes. Black Dynamite himself, for example, is both a celebration and a critique of the blacksplotation heroes of the 1960s and 1970s.

One of the more impressive aspects of the show is how it balances this critique. The writers are careful to construct a show which can be enjoyed on it's own merits. Without any knowledge beyond the show itself, one can enjoy it as an action/adventure based cartoon with a heavy comedic element. However, anyone familiar with pop culture is sure to find a wide variety of subtle to blatant commentary on a variety of subjects. This can range from more common elements such as commentary on race relations of the 1960s and 1970s culture, all the way to acting as unofficial prologues to TV shows of the 1980s.

The only caution is that the humor might be a bit too crude at times for a younger or more sensitive audience. While the show is animated, it's most certainly not intended for younger viewers.
