Detective Jake Peralta is a talented and carefree detective who loves his job and has an innate ability to solve cases. The show starts with his colleagues, Terry Jeffords and Captain Ray Holt, worrying about his juvenile tactics, which could jeopardize their investigations. In the opening scene, Jake's infamous "I Want It That Way" rendition is the perfect indicator of his playful nature.

Captain Holt gives the squad a new captain's rule of the day and tasks everyone with fingerprinting and identifying a suspect. When Jake learns of the assignment, he immediately follows up with how he doesn't want to do it. However, he puts aside his likes and dislikes and sets out to work on the case. His quick wit and lack of inhibitions help him solve the case with utmost ease, establishing himself as an expert detective.

Back at the precinct, Brooklyn Nine-Nine introduces the rest of the squad members, each having their quirks, interests, and personality traits that make them unique. The show takes us through the squad's daily interactions and strange cases that they are always working on, with hilarious and relatable incidents portraying their lives. Detective Terry Jeffords is Jake's mentor, a hulking figure, both literally and figuratively, who knows how to keep Jake grounded and in check when his antics get out of hand.

Sergeant Terry has a tough job keeping the precinct running, and his own home life is a study in hustle and bustle, with his two daughters and wife. He struggles with the balance of being a dad and a cop, and his colleagues understand his problems and support him as best they can. Meanwhile, Detective Rosa Diaz is a stoic and intimidating figure, her fierce attitude and "don't mess with me" persona making her the ideal person to talk to when Jake needs help.

Enter Detective Amy Santiago, whom Jake has a long-standing crush on. She is his work nemesis, and the pair is always competing to outdo each other. Her straight-laced personality puts her at odds with Jake, but her ambition and intelligence keep her ahead of the game. Next, the delightfully oddball relationship between Detectives Charles Boyle and Hitchcock and Scully, who are always available to bring the entire show to a hilarious conclusion with their quirky activities.

Towards the end of the episode, a larger case emerges, and the squad works on it tirelessly, bringing an element of seriousness to the show. Captain Holt, who has been working miles away from his detectives, finally arrives at the precinct to oversee the case. Jake is nervous and starstruck by him. Holt is the ultimate straight-man, eccentric with his buzz-cut hairdo and emotionless demeanour, adding a unique dimension to the show.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 1 episode 1, Pilot, is a great start to the show, introducing the audience to the squad's personalities and their lives while providing the crime-fighting element that viewers crave. The episode sets the tone for the rest of the series, highlighting the show's blend of comedy, heart, and drama flawlessly. The performances and chemistry between the actors make the show feel genuine and relatable, winning the hearts of fans universally.
