In a post-apocalyptic Earth humanity is on the brink of extinction. Robots have become self aware and conquered the humans and control the land. Casshern had been an assassin working for the Braiking Boss, who ruled over the world firmly and harshly. One day Luna, a young girl, showed up having been supposed to be a salvation for all of human kind. Braiking Boss saw her as a threat to his power over the people. Because of this he ordered her to be assassinated. Casshern and two other cyborg assassins are sent to dispose of her. Casshern is the strongest of them and manages to kill Luna. However this sets into motion a cataclysmic series of events.

Hundreds of years later robots are falling apart. Despair and death are abundant everywhere. Casshern , missing since he killed Luna, reappears. He has no memory of his past.
