Cheers is a classic American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 30, 1982 to May 20, 1993. Set in the fictional Cheers bar in Boston, Massachusetts, the show follows the daily lives of the bar's patrons and employees. At the heart of the show is Sam Malone, played by Ted Danson, the charming and womanizing former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Sam is the proprietor of Cheers, where he oversees a colorful cast of regulars including the neurotic waitress Carla Tortelli, played by Rhea Perlman, and the lovable barfly Norm Peterson, played by George Wendt.

Early in the series, Cheers is also home to a quirky and somewhat enigmatic bartender named Ernie "Coach" Pantusso, played by Nicholas Colasanto. Coach is beloved by the regulars despite his occasionally senile behavior, but unfortunately the actor who played him passed away after the third season, leading to the introduction of a new character named Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson.

Another standout character on the show is Dr. Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer. Frasier is a psychiatrist who becomes a regular at Cheers and eventually marries Lilith Sternin, played by Bebe Neuwirth, who also happens to be a regular character on the show. When their marriage falls apart, Frasier moves to Seattle and the character is given his own spin-off series, Frasier.

Cheers is also famous for its romantic tension between Sam and the uptight and sophisticated bar manager Diane Chambers, played by Shelley Long. Diane is Sam's intellectual equal, but their mutual attraction is complicated by their wildly different personalities and their inability to fully commit to each other.

Eventually, Diane leaves Cheers to pursue a career in writing, leaving Sam to carry on without her. The show continues to explore the lives and loves of the Cheers regulars, including the arrival of a new waitress named Rebecca Howe, played by Kirstie Alley.

Throughout its eleven-year run, Cheers was a critical and commercial success, earning numerous awards including 28 Emmys and six Golden Globes. The show remains a beloved part of American pop culture and is often cited as one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

In conclusion, Cheers is a classic sitcom that explores the lives and loves of a group of regulars at a bar in Boston. With a talented ensemble cast, sharp writing, and memorable characters, Cheers remains a beloved part of American television history.

Cheers is a series that is currently running and has 11 seasons (284 episodes). The series first aired on September 30, 1982.
