Jeff Winger finds himself back at Greendale Community College at the start of the second season of the hit sitcom Community, after successfully passing Spanish classes with the study group in the previous season. In the season premiere, Anthropology 101, the study group is back and ready for a new semester of classes, hijinks, and mishaps.

The episode begins with Dean Pelton welcoming everyone back to Greendale, where they are all greeted by a new anthropology professor, Dr. Marshall Kane, played by guest star Michael K. Williams. Kane is a tough, no-nonsense professor who expects a lot from his students. The students complain about the difficulty of the course, which leads Jeff to gather the study group again to figure out how to pass the class, and to deal with their personal issues.

The group is in disarray. Pierce is dealing with the aftermath of his failed marriage and his father's death, while Jeff is still figuring out how to balance his blossoming legal career with his responsibilities as a student. Troy and Abed are still trying to form the perfect non-romantic relationship, while Britta is struggling with her sexuality and trying to come to terms with her feelings for Jeff.

The group decides to visit Kane during his office hours to try to convince him to lower the standards for the class, but he refuses and warns them that anthropology is a rigorous field that requires hard work and dedication. The group then comes up with their own idea to study in secret, without revealing their identities to Kane, to prove that they are just as capable as any other anthropology student.

Their plans are foiled, however, when Kane finds out about their secret study group and confronts them in class. The group is then forced to reveal their identities to Kane, who is surprised but not impressed by their actions. Instead, he challenges them to prove themselves by participating in a skull identification exercise.

Throughout the episode, the group struggles with their individual and collective issues while trying to prove their worth to Kane. They bicker, argue, and fail repeatedly, but eventually, they all come to realize that they are stronger together than on their own.

In the end, the group comes together to successfully complete the skull identification exercise, showing Kane and themselves that they are capable of great things. Anthropology 101 sets the tone for the rest of the season by highlighting the group's strengths and weaknesses while exploring themes of identity, acceptance, and community–the very essence of the show's name.
