In "Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy," the 18th episode of the second season of Community, Jeff (Joel McHale) represents Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) in court as she and her ex-husband Andre (Malcolm Jamal Warner) fight for custody of their children. Meanwhile, Britta (Gillian Jacobs) gets involved in a protest against a fictional foreign country's human rights violations, which ultimately results in her leading a delegation to meet with the country's leader.

The episode begins with Shirley and Andre meeting with Jeff to discuss the custody battle. Jeff, who has no experience in family law, agrees to represent Shirley in court after realizing he doesn't have any pressing cases coming up. He even enlists the help of Abed (Danny Pudi) to research family law and prepare a strong case. However, Jeff's inexperience and lack of knowledge in this legal area lead to some hilarious missteps in court.

Meanwhile, Britta discovers a cause to rally behind when she hears about the fictional country of Lukavia's human rights violations. Britta dives headfirst into organizing a protest against Lukavia and its president. She even goes so far as to recruit a handful of students to participate in a hunger strike, which quickly backfires when they start eating again almost immediately. But, despite the setback, Britta's efforts catch the attention of the media, leading to her being invited to meet with the president of Lukavia himself, causing her to second-guess her actions.

Back at the custody hearing, Jeff's lack of knowledge in family law causes him to make mistakes, first by offending the judge and then by accusing Andre of being a bad father based on a personal anecdote. Things only get worse when Andre's lawyer (played by guest star Ray Wise) presents a surprise witness that challenges Shirley's credibility. Shirley becomes increasingly frustrated with Jeff's incompetence, leading to a tense exchange between the two.

Meanwhile, Britta and a small group of students travel to Lukavia to meet with the president, where they discover the harsh reality of Lukavian life and find that their chosen cause may not be as noble as they initially thought. In keeping with the show's penchant for meta-commentary, the episode also calls attention to some of the more formulaic aspects of television dramas, with characters repeatedly pointing out that there always seems to be a "surprise witness" in these sorts of cases.

The episode culminates in a hilarious and somewhat surreal scene where the custody battle and Britta's diplomatic mission converge in an unexpected way. The characters' various storylines come together in an unexpected way that leads to a satisfying conclusion, while also throwing in a few laughs along the way. Overall, "Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy" is a solid episode of Community, showcasing the show's ability to balance its quirky humor with genuine heart.
