Jules (Courteney Cox) is feeling a bit lost now that Travis (Dan Byrd) has gone off to college. She's struggling to find her identity and purpose outside of being a mother. Meanwhile, Ellie (Christa Miller) is feeling neglected by Andy (Ian Gomez) who is obsessing over his new hobby, sailing. She begrudgingly attends a boat show with him and seems to have found a new interest in the world of competitive sailing.

Bobby (Brian Van Holt) is struggling with the idea that he may be too old to continue his career as a professional golfer. Grayson (Josh Hopkins) encourages him to try and break a record to prove that he's still got it. However, his attempts are met with failure until Jules convinces him to try a new approach.

In a subplot, Laurie (Busy Philipps) is still attempting to seduce Travis via text message despite his lack of interest. In her desperation, she ends up sending a revealing photo to the entire cul-de-sac.

The group decides to take a trip to the beach to celebrate Jules' newfound love of kayaking. However, their day takes a turn when they realize that there is a group of young, attractive kayakers nearby. Jules becomes self-conscious and begins to feel like she's too old to join in on the fun. Through a series of events, she ends up proving to herself that age doesn't matter and that she's still capable of having a good time.

Overall, "Into the Great Wide Open" focuses on the theme of aging and the fear that comes with it. The characters are each going through their own struggles as they come to terms with getting older. However, the episode also takes a light-hearted approach to the topic and reminds us that age is just a number.
