Crash Course is an educational YouTube channel started by brothers John and Hank Green in 2012. Originally launched as part of an educational video blog called Vlogbrothers, Crash Course was spun off to focus specifically on creating short videos that help high school and college students quickly learn or review subjects like science, history, literature, film and more.

The show's name comes from the idea that the episodes can metaphorically "crash course" you on the topics, giving you a high-level overview meant to supplement more traditional education. While not comprehensive, the goal is to make learning more approachable, engaging and even fun.

Structurally, Crash Course episodes are typically between 10 to 15 minutes long. They feature high production value with quick editing, quality graphics, comedic animations and even occasional special effects and props to illustrate concepts.

The show is hosted primarily by John and Hank Green themselves, although they do bring in other hosts with specific expertise from time to time. With over 11 million subscribers and more than a billion total views, Crash Course demonstrates there is clearly demand for educational content presented in faster, livelier formats not always found in schools and textbooks. Its hosts have even suggested much of the show's popularity comes from students secretly watching episodes to fill in gaps where their formal studies have fallen short.

While mainly focused on academic subjects, Crash Course also features some episodes on topics around philosophy, media analysis or current events when they want to explore issues around ethics, citizenship or cultural dialogue as well.

Overall the show represents an experiment in using new media to make education more accessible and less intimidating. By combining rigorous study of traditionally dense topics with modern presentation styles, Crash Course aims to empower both lifelong learners and reluctant students alike.
