In Dallas (2012) season 2 episode 5, entitled "Trial and Error," the Ewings are facing a multitude of legal and financial problems. John Ross (played by Josh Henderson) is being sued by Elena (played by Jordana Brewster) for fraud, while his father J.R. (played by the late Larry Hagman) is being investigated by the SEC for insider trading. Bobby (played by Patrick Duffy) is struggling with his decision to sell Southfork, while Christopher (played by Jesse Metcalfe) is dealing with the fallout from his failed marriage to Rebecca (played by Julie Gonzalo).

As the episode begins, John Ross is facing Elena in court, with the entire Ewing family watching anxiously from the sidelines. Elena's lawyer is determined to prove that John Ross committed fraud by selling fake oil leases to her, and John Ross is equally determined to prove his innocence. The trial becomes more and more heated as each side presents their evidence, with shocking revelations about John Ross's past coming to light.

Meanwhile, J.R. is meeting with his financial advisor, Bum (played by Kevin Page), hoping to find a way out of his legal troubles. Bum suggests that J.R. invest in a new oil well in Mexico, but J.R. is hesitant, knowing that it could be a risky move. However, when the SEC threatens to freeze all of his assets, J.R. decides to take Bum's advice and invest in the Mexican well.

Bobby, meanwhile, is having second thoughts about selling Southfork. He meets with the potential buyers, but finds that he can't bring himself to go through with the sale. In a moment of desperation, he calls Christopher and begs him to help him come up with a way to save the ranch.

Christopher, however, is dealing with his own problems. He is still reeling from the revelation that Rebecca is actually Cliff Barnes's daughter, and he's struggling to come to terms with his failed marriage. He meets with his lawyer to discuss his options, but finds that he's not sure what he wants to do.

As the episode progresses, the Ewings are hit with even more setbacks. John Ross's lawyer quits, leaving him to represent himself in court. J.R.'s investment in the Mexican well turns out to be a disaster, and he's left with nothing. And Bobby's attempts to save Southfork are thwarted by the potential buyers, who seem determined to take the ranch no matter what.

But in true Ewing fashion, the family refuses to give up. John Ross gives a rousing defense in court, proving his innocence and winning the case against Elena. Bobby comes up with a last-minute plan to save Southfork, and Christopher decides to move on from Rebecca and focus on his work.

By the end of the episode, the Ewings have once again proven that they are a force to be reckoned with. Despite all the legal and financial problems they face, they remain united and determined to succeed no matter what. "Trial and Error" is a thrilling and emotional episode that showcases the strength and resilience of the Ewing family.
