Dear Genevieve is a home improvement show that follows interior designer, Genevieve Gorder as she helps homeowners transform their spaces. In season 1, episode 1, titled "A Zest for Zoning," Genevieve meets with a couple who recently purchased a new home, but are struggling to make it functional for their family of four.

The couple, Nikki and Rishad, are both doctors who work from home and have two young children. They are looking to create separate workspaces for themselves, as well as play areas for their children. However, the layout of their home is making it difficult to achieve these goals.

Genevieve starts by assessing the current layout of the home and creating zoning plans. She discusses how zoning is important for creating functional spaces and dividing up a home so that each area serves a specific purpose.

One issue Genevieve notices is that the front room of the house is being used as a storage space, which is not making good use of the square footage. She suggests turning the space into a home office for Nikki, as it has natural light and is tucked away from the rest of the house. Nikki is thrilled with the idea and Genevieve gets to work transforming the space.

Next, Genevieve tackles the problem of Rishad's workspace. His current office space is cramped and not conducive to concentration. Genevieve suggests transforming the garage into a spacious office space. This would provide ample space for Rishad to work, as well as storage for the family's bikes, skis, and other outdoor equipment.

In addition to creating separate workspaces for Nikki and Rishad, Genevieve is also tasked with creating functional play areas for the kids. She notes that the front room, which was once a storage space, can now be used as a playroom for the kids. Genevieve enlists the help of a carpenter to build custom shelving and desks for the kids' play area.

Finally, Genevieve focuses on the living space of the home. She notes that the current layout is not allowing for enough seating, which can be problematic for entertaining guests. She suggests removing the sectional couch and replacing it with a more traditional seating arrangement. This would allow for more seating and better flow throughout the space.

Throughout the episode, Genevieve emphasizes the importance of creating functional spaces within a home. She notes that zoning is key to creating a home that works well for the people living in it. By the end of the episode, Nikki and Rishad have a home that is both beautiful and functional, with separate workspaces for each of them, as well as ample play areas for their children.
