"Denno Coil" is a science-fiction anime television series produced by NHK that takes place in the year 2026. It follows the story of thirteen-year-old Yuko Okonogi as she moves to Daikoku City, a place where Augmented Reality (AR) technology has become so advanced that it's now part of daily life. Her parents work for a company that creates virtual pets, and Yuko’s first priority is to get her own AI pet. However, she soon becomes caught up in mysterious events surrounding glitches in the AR technology and the existence of "illegals," which are computer viruses or spirits that have taken on a physical form in the virtual world.

As the plot unfolds, Yuko, along with her new group of friends, gradually uncovers a dangerous conspiracy related to the use of AR technology in the city. They soon discover that the technology they've grown accustomed to has a dark side that leads to dire consequences. In particular, the children learn about the existence of the "cursed city" – an AR world that has become corrupted and haunted by a menacing spirit.

The show effectively balances the exploration of advanced technology with an engaging coming-of-age narrative. The main characters exhibit a wide range of emotions, from wonder to fear, as they navigate the increasingly complex virtual landscape. Yuko is a protagonist who is curious, brave, and empathetic. Her character is well-developed and relatable for young viewers who are growing up in a digital world themselves.

The animation of the show is impressive, especially the use of the AR world. The virtual reality is not just a backdrop to the character's lives but plays an instrumental role in the plot. The AR world appears just like the real world but with added layers and depth, and the animation captures every aspect of it with spectacular color, detail, and movement.

Another aspect that sets "Denno Coil" apart from other anime series is its exploration of scientific concepts. The show incorporates cutting-edge technology, such as AR and high-performance implants, alongside futuristic ideas that highlight the potential dangers of technology. It also addresses complex topics such as identity, privacy, and the ethics of technology. The show introduces these themes in a way that is not only engaging but also educative.

The characters in the show are a diverse mix of teenage boys and girls, each with their distinct personalities and quirks. The voice acting is excellent, and each character is given a unique voice that complements their personality. The supporting characters are also given a chance to shine, and they all have their own motivations and backstories that add depth to the story.

The music in the show is another standout. It has a mix of upbeat and melancholic melodies that capture the mood of the story. The opening and closing themes songs are particularly catchy, and they capture the essence of the show's themes.

The show's pacing is excellent, and it manages to keep the audience hooked throughout. The series progresses with each episode and builds toward a thrilling climax that answers most of the questions the characters and the audience have had throughout the show.

In all, "Denno Coil" is a great anime show that combines exciting action, intricate world-building, and timeless themes of friendship and coming of age. While its central concept is based on advanced technology, the show delivers its messages in a way that is accessible to everyone, regardless of their familiarity with science-fiction. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves anime and science-fiction.
