  • December 24, 2014

In season 21 episode 16 of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, host Guy Fieri celebrates memorable moms who run fantastic family businesses across America. From a Korean joint in Houston to a breakfast spot in Maine, Fieri takes the audience on a culinary journey filled with a variety of flavors.

First on the list is a tiny but mighty spot called Mom's Tamales in Los Angeles. This family-owned spot is run by a mother and daughter duo who make some of the best tamales in the city. Fieri gets a chance to taste their award-winning chicken tamales and a mix of pork and cheese tamales.

Next up is a spot called Haverhill Beef Co. in Boston, where a devoted mom and her son are serving classic New England dishes. Fieri tries their local favorite – a roast beef sandwich with horseradish sauce – and even helps make their famous ice cream with the mother-son duo.

In Portland, Oregon, Fieri stops by Pok Pok Noi, a Thai street food spot run by a mom and her team. She learned how to cook from her grandmother and now serves up dishes like Khao Man Som Tam (coconut rice and green papaya salad) and Moo Sadoong (charcoal-roasted pork neck with chili dip).

The episode also takes viewers to a family-owned Italian restaurant in Las Vegas aptly named Nora's. Nora, the mother, chef, and owner, has been running the joint for over 25 years. Fieri samples their famous lasagna and shrimp scampi with garlic toast.

The journey continues to a food truck in Houston called The Rice Box. The truck's owner, mom-in-law, and son-in-law team serves up classic Chinese-American dishes with a twist. Fieri tries their famous General Tso's Chicken, steamed buns, and crispy tofu.

In Maine, Fieri visits Becky's Diner, a waterfront restaurant run by a mom and her daughter. Becky's has been around for over 20 years and is known for its homemade corned beef hash and blueberry pancakes – both of which Fieri gets to try.

Finally, in Boston, Fieri visits a mom and pop sandwich shop called Sam LaGrassa's. The father and son duo that run it learned how to cook from their mother and grandmother, respectively. Fieri tastes their famed pastrami and corned beef sandwich and a lobster roll.

Throughout the episode, Fieri not only samples delicious cuisines but also gets to listen to the stories of the families who run each spot. The memorable moms and their family-run businesses make this episode a heartwarming and delicious watch.
