Martin Ellingham is a brilliant surgeon whose phobia for blood has forced him to change his profession and move to the picturesque village of Portwenn as a General Practitioner. Here, he tries to adjust to his new life, which isn't without its fair share of eccentricities. In this episode, we see Martin juggle his professional and personal life.

Martin's medical practice is in a state of chaos. He spends most of his time dealing with his patients' unconventional ailments and his surgeon's skills come into play more often than not. His patients' outlandish problems range from an old man convinced that he is dead and a woman who has lost her sense of smell, to a man suffering from severe migraines and a woman who feels like she is pregnant, even though she has had a hysterectomy.

While Martin's patients might seem strange, they reflect the village's idiosyncrasies. Portwenn's villagers have peculiar personalities, and they are anything but ordinary. They are colorful, and their behavior can be both amusing and perplexing at times. Martin finds himself having to deal with the village's oddities, even as he tries to find a cure for his patients' problems.

As he struggles to keep up with the demands of his patients, Martin's relationship with Louisa becomes more complicated. Louisa is a teacher who has caught Martin's attention, and the two have been trying to get to know each other better. However, their relationship hits a snag when Martin's phobia for blood comes into play during their dinner date, leaving Louisa feeling frustrated. Martin tries to make it up to her by buying her lavender-scented candles, a gesture that seems to work, but only temporarily.

Amidst all this chaos, Martin's Aunt Joan is organizing an aromatherapy session at the village hall, inviting the villagers to attend. Martin is skeptical of the event and doesn't believe in the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. However, Aunt Joan's persistence makes him attend the session. Martin is in for a surprise as he discovers the unexpected results of the therapy, leaving him both confused and intrigued.

'Aromatherapy' is a humorous and light-hearted episode that showcases the quaintness and peculiarities of Portwenn. The episode is peppered with witty dialogues and charming characters, but it also highlights the darker side of Martin's personality. We see him struggle to keep his composure as he deals with his patients' bizarre problems and as he tries to adjust to his new life in the village. The episode provides a glimpse into Martin's past and the reasons behind his phobia for blood, adding depth to his character.

As the episode draws to a close, we see Martin and Louisa trying to reconcile their differences. Martin's efforts to win Louisa over are amusing, and we can't help but root for him. The episode ends on a hopeful note, leaving us eagerly waiting to see what's in store for Martin and the people of Portwenn.
