Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who is obsessed with the sport of lifting, where riders fly on aerial vehicles called the Trapar. Though Renton's father Adroc was a legendary lifter who saved the world many years ago, Renton lives a mundane life with his grandfather and dreams of one day joining a rebel group called Gekkostate.

One day, Renton spots a mysterious girl piloting a giant mecha that crashes near his home. He helps her fix the mecha, which she names the Nirvash TypeZERO, and is introduced to the girl, Eureka, who is a member of Gekkostate. Renton is thrilled to finally meet members of his dream rebel group and eagerly takes Eureka to his grandfather's home.

However, things don't go as planned as Eureka causes a commotion in the town and attracts the attention of the military. Renton is devastated when the group leaves without him, but he is determined to join Gekkostate and help them in their endeavors.
