Watch Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords follows the misadventures of a folk-rock duo from New Zealand trying to find fame in America. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement star as fictionalized characters of the same names. They share a cramped apartment in New York City. Bret plays the guitar and piano and is the quiet one, while Jemaine, the bass player, is more extroverted. They are aided by their inept manager, Murray, who works at the New Zealand Consulate by day. Other friends and cohorts include Dave, their clueless American friend, and the psychotic Mel, their only fan.

The series was created by Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement and British film director James Bobin. It originated as an improvised BBC Radio 2 series before being picked up by HBO. James Bobin is also known for writing and directing the HBO series Da Ali G Show, which spawned the popular comedic characters Borat and Brüno. Before the show, Bret McKenzie had a small part in the Lord of the Rings films. After the show, he served as the musical supervisor for the latest Muppets movie. Jemaine Clement has found success in films such as Dinner for Schmucks and Men in Black 3.

The show follows their day-to-day lives as they try to get music gigs and meet women. Although both are socially awkward, Bret is more popular with the ladies due to his good looks. Jemaine is a goof that too often sticks his foot in his mouth. They are often at odds due to both of them falling in love with the same woman, but they remain friends and band mates throughout the series. Due to the incompetency of their manager, they often play at strange locations such as the aquarium, a travel expo and a canine benefit.

Each episode is about 30 minutes and features numerous musical numbers. The show ran for two seasons, for a total of 22 episodes. The show was nominated for 10 Emmy awards.
