As a medical lab technician, Joann Katrinak had the opportunity to help people on a daily basis by analyzing blood samples and assisting in various medical procedures. However, her life took a dark turn on December 15, 1994, when she and her three-month-old son went missing without a trace. Upon investigation, the police found that Joann's husband, Andrew, was the last known person to see them alive. He told the authorities that he had received a call from Joann saying that she and their son were going to visit his mother. He claims that he had asked if he could join them but Joann declined, saying that she wanted to have some quality time with their son.

Andrew, along with his family, cooperated with the police investigation and even volunteered to take a polygraph test to prove his innocence. However, the results were inconclusive, and the authorities were convinced that he had something to do with the disappearance of his wife and son. The case went cold for a year until a Christmas card arrived at the Katrinak family home. It was addressed to Joann and was postmarked June 1995, which was six months after the disappearance. The handwriting was found to match that of Patricia Rorrer, a woman who Andrew had dated briefly before meeting Joann.

The authorities then decided to focus their investigation on Patricia Rorrer, who had a history of reckless behavior and was known to have a volatile relationship with Andrew. She was brought in for questioning, but she denied any involvement in the disappearance. However, further evidence was found linking her to the case. A shoe print found at the crime scene was matched to a pair of boots owned by Rorrer, and DNA evidence found on a piece of chewing gum placed her at the location where Joann and her son were last seen.

Rorrer was arrested and charged with the murder of Joann Katrinak and her son, but the authorities still needed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was guilty. This is where forensic science came into play. The forensic experts analyzed the DNA evidence found on the chewing gum and found that it belonged to Rorrer. They also found fibers on the duct tape used to bind Joann's hands that matched Rorrer's clothes. The piece of duct tape was found to have fibers that matched Joann's clothes as well.

The authorities also found soil samples on Rorrer's boots that matched the soil found at the location where Joann and her son were last seen. The forensic experts concluded that there was a high probability that the soil on Rorrer's boots had come from the crime scene. Furthermore, the carpet fibers found in Rorrer's car were a match to the carpet fibers found at the Katrinak family's home.

The forensic evidence presented by the authorities was overwhelming, and Rorrer was ultimately found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. The forensic evidence not only proved Rorrer's guilt, but it also gave the family of Joann and her son some closure.

Forensic Files is a show that tells the stories of real-life criminal investigations where forensic science played a crucial role. In this particular episode, the forensic experts used DNA analysis, fiber analysis, shoe print comparisons, and soil analysis to prove that Patricia Rorrer was guilty of murder. The use of forensic science in criminal investigations has come a long way since the inception of the show in 1996, and it is fascinating to see the evolution of forensic technology over time. The Material Witness episode is a prime example of how forensic science can not only solve crimes but also help bring closure to victims' families.
