  • October 21, 2014

Four in a Bed is a reality show where four different bed and breakfast owners take turns to stay at each other's properties and then rate their experience. Each day, the guests leave early in the morning to visit local attractions while the hosts prepare breakfast and tidy up the rooms. Then, they come back to give feedback and pay the bill. The winner of the competition is the property with the highest score.

In season 8, episode 17, titled The Flower Pot, the four contestants are showing off their quintessentially British inns. The first stop is in the small market town of Ross-on-Wye, where the hosts are Tracy and Michael, the owners of The Flower Pot - a thirteen room country inn that has just undergone a recent renovation. As soon as the contestants arrive, they are greeted by the adorable cocker spaniel that roams the property. Tracy and Michael show their guests around and explain how they have incorporated the history of the building in the decor of the rooms. The guests are impressed with the friendly welcome and the lovely ambience, but they are not sure about some of the outdated furnishings.

Later, the contestants go for a boat ride on the River Wye and stop for a cream tea picnic. When they return to The Flower Pot, they are surprised to find a basket of spa products in their rooms as a welcome gift. They are even more delighted when Tracy gives them a handmade chocolate cake to enjoy. The guests are impressed with the high-quality breakfast, which features homemade granola, freshly squeezed juice, and locally sourced bacon and sausages. They are impressed by the fact that all dietary requirements were catered for.

The second stop is The Lodge on the Marsh, in Southampton. The hosts, Kent and Vicky, welcome the guests to their newly refurbished Victorian villa that has four spacious rooms. The guests are impressed by the size of the rooms and the views of the natural reserve, but some of them find some of the decor too modern. Kent and Vicky show the guests their impressive wine cellar and offer them a tasting experience. The guests are also treated to a dinner cooked by the hosts, which they describe as a highlight of the trip. They appreciate the local ingredients and the delicious flavours, but some of them find the presentation too fussy.

The third stop is at The Swan Motel, in Bedfordshire, which is owned by father and son, Brian and Colin. The guests find the motel quite dated, but all rooms are clean and comfortable. They are impressed by the scale model of the Titanic that is in the dining area. They also enjoy the pub-style atmosphere and the traditional English breakfast. However, some of them are not happy with the fact that they had to wait a long time to be served and that some of the options on the menu were not available.

The final stop is at Priskilly Forest Country House, in Wales, which is run by the affable couple, Patrick and Louise. The guests are amazed by the beautiful location, the stunning views, and the charming historic building. They all find the rooms immaculate and beautifully decorated with soft colours and antique furniture. They enjoy a tour of the farm and the chance to feed the animals. The dinner is superb, and the guests are particularly enamored of the selection of Welsh cheeses. However, some of them find the bed too soft and the shower too small.

The feedback session is intense, and all the contestants are surprised by the scores. There is also a heated argument between two of the contestants, which creates tension and drama among them. The winner is announced, and the hosts are thrilled with the recognition. They all leave with new knowledge about running a successful B&B, new friends and a new appreciation of what it takes to be a host. The Flower Pot has really put on a show, but is it enough to win the competition? Only the scores will tell.
