Foyle's War is a British detective drama television series set during the Second World War. The show follows detective chief superintendent Christopher Foyle, portrayed by Michael Kitchen, as he investigates crimes committed on the home front. The first episode of season one is titled The German Woman.

The episode begins with the discovery of a body in Hastings, a seaside town on the south coast of England. Foyle, who is originally from London but is now stationed in Hastings, is called to investigate. The body is that of a young woman, and it is clear that she has been murdered.

As Foyle begins his investigation, he learns that the woman was German and had been working on a local farm as a domestic servant. This fact immediately raises suspicions, as anti-German sentiment is high due to the ongoing war. Foyle and his team dig deeper into the woman's background and discover that she was a refugee who had fled Nazi Germany.

Foyle soon realizes that he is dealing with a complex case. There are a number of potential suspects, including the farmer and his wife, who employed the woman, and a local restaurant owner who had been romantically involved with her. There are also a number of other characters who appear to have something to hide.

As Foyle interviews the various suspects, he begins to piece together a picture of what happened to the German woman. It becomes clear that her murder was not a simple crime of passion, but was instead motivated by something much darker.

The episode is a testament to the show's incredible attention to detail. The costumes and sets are all meticulously designed to accurately reflect life in England during the war. The dialogue is also spot-on, with characters using expressions that were common at the time.

The acting is superb throughout the episode, with Michael Kitchen delivering a fantastic performance as Foyle. He brings a gravitas to the role that few other actors could match, and is able to convey both intelligence and compassion with ease.

The supporting cast is also excellent, with standout performances from Anthony Howell as Foyle's sergeant, and Honeysuckle Weeks as a young woman who befriends Foyle and provides him with valuable information.

The German Woman is a thrilling and engaging start to the first season of Foyle's War. The writing is sharp, the acting is superb, and the attention to detail is astounding. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys detective dramas or is interested in the history of the Second World War.
