Ep 1. Iowa

Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, and Jessa are back for another season of Girls. The first episode of season 4, titled "Iowa," follows the four friends as they begin the next chapter in their lives.

Hannah has just received news that she has been accepted into the Iowa Writers' Workshop, a prestigious graduate writing program. She is thrilled at the opportunity to further her writing career, but also hesitant to leave her life in New York City behind. Her boyfriend, Adam, is supportive of her decision, but she worries about their relationship surviving a long-distance separation.

Marnie is also experiencing a big life change as she quits her job as a hostess at a fancy restaurant to pursue a career in music. She has been taking singing lessons and writing her own songs, and feeling unfulfilled in her current job, she decides to take a risk and follow her dreams.

Meanwhile, Shoshanna is struggling to adjust to life post-college. She is living in Japan, where she worked as a teacher for a year after graduation, but is now back in the States and feeling lost. She is trying to figure out her next move, but feels like everyone around her has their life together while she is still searching for her place in the world.

Jessa, meanwhile, is back in rehab following her relapse at the end of season 3. The once-independent and free-spirited Jessa is now confined to the regimented routine of rehab, but seems to be taking it seriously and making progress.

As the girls navigate their individual challenges, they also must navigate their changing friendships. Marnie is upset that Hannah didn't tell her about her acceptance into the writing program, while Hannah is frustrated with Marnie's lack of support for her new opportunity. Shoshanna feels like she is growing apart from her friends as they all pursue different paths, while Jessa is forced to confront the consequences of her past actions and how they have affected her relationships.

"Iowa" sets the stage for a season that will explore the themes of change, growth, and the complexities of adult friendships. As the girls continue to figure out their place in the world, they must also figure out their place in each other's lives.
