In Gunsmoke season 4 episode 19, titled "Passive Resistance," the town of Dodge City is thrown into chaos when a group of pacifists arrive in town to promote their nonviolent beliefs. The group, led by a man named Henry Huckaby, believes that violence only begets more violence and that peaceful resistance is the only way to bring about change.

However, their message doesn't sit well with many of the residents of Dodge City, particularly with Matt Dillon, the town's marshal. Matt has always believed in enforcing the law and using force when necessary to keep the peace. When he learns that Huckaby and his followers refuse to fight back even if they are attacked, he becomes concerned that they will be easy targets for the town's less savory characters.

Matt's fears are quickly realized when a group of outlaws, led by a notorious criminal named Reno, decide to take advantage of the pacifists' nonviolent stance. Reno and his gang begin to harass and intimidate Huckaby's followers, knowing that they will not fight back. In response, Huckaby and his group refuse to back down, insisting on maintaining their peaceful stance even in the face of violence.

As tensions rise between the two groups, Matt is forced to choose which side he is on. He is torn between his duty as marshal to protect all the citizens of Dodge City and his respect for Huckaby's beliefs. Eventually, Matt realizes that both sides have valid points and that there can be a middle ground where both violence and pacifism can coexist. He comes up with a plan to end the conflict and bring both sides together, but it may be too late to stop the violence that has already been set in motion.

"Passive Resistance" is a thought-provoking episode that explores the complex issues surrounding violence and nonviolence. It raises important questions about the role of law enforcement in maintaining peace, as well as the power of nonviolent resistance in bringing about change. The episode is expertly acted, with James Arness delivering a nuanced performance that shows the conflict within Matt Dillon as he struggles to find a solution. The supporting cast is also excellent, particularly the actors playing Huckaby and Reno, who bring depth and complexity to their roles. Overall, "Passive Resistance" is a standout episode in the Gunsmoke series and a must-watch for fans of Westerns, drama, and thought-provoking television.
