Ep 1. We Can't Make Any Friends

Kodaka Hasegawa is a transfer student who has just arrived at St. Chronica's Academy. Despite his attempts to blend in with his new classmates, his naturally blonde hair and fierce-looking demeanor make him stand out. Kodaka has always struggled to make friends, and his situation at St. Chronica's is no different. He feels isolated and alone, even amidst a sea of people.

One day, Kodaka accidentally walks in on the cheerful and outgoing Yozora Mikazuki as she's talking to herself in an empty classroom. She quickly covers up her embarrassment by pretending to have been talking to an imaginary friend, which leads to a conversation between the two of them. They bond over their shared loneliness and decide to start a club together with the goal of making friends.

The two quickly recruit others to join the club, including the shy and reserved Sena Kashiwazaki, who is shown to be popular and beautiful but struggles with social interactions; Yukimura Kusunoki, a boy who idolizes Kodaka and wants to become more manly; and Rika Shiguma, a genius inventor with a penchant for creating bizarre gadgets.

As the group tries to come up with ideas for making friends, they quickly realize that they all have very different personalities and interests. Yozora, who seems to have a natural aptitude for social interaction, comes up with a series of bizarre training exercises that are meant to help the group become more outgoing. But her methods end up causing more harm than good, as they result in a number of embarrassing and uncomfortable situations.

Despite their struggles, the group remains committed to their goal of making friends. They continue to push themselves out of their comfort zones and work to understand and support each other, even as they all come to terms with their own personal insecurities. As the episode comes to a close, the group experiences a small victory when they manage to start a conversation with a pair of strangers at the nearby park.

Overall, the first episode of Haganai is an intriguing introduction to a group of characters who are grappling with issues of loneliness and social anxiety.
