Heidi is a heartwarming Australian television drama series that first premiered on March 22, 2015, on Network Ten. The show is based on the 1880s novel Heidi's Years of Wandering and Learning by Swiss author Johanna Spyri. The series is set in the picturesque Alps, and it tells the story of a young orphan named Heidi (Beth Armstrong) who finds herself taken to live with her reclusive grandfather in the mountains after the death of her parents.

At the beginning of the show, the viewers are introduced to Heidi, who is being taken up the mountain by her aunt Dete (Nicole Shostak) to her grandfather's (Jason Chong) house. When they arrive, her grandfather is angry that Heidi has been left with him, but eventually, he welcomes her and begins to teach her about the mountains and the beauty of the outdoors. Heidi's grandfather is a bit of a recluse, and he is known for his rough exterior, but as the series progresses, he slowly opens up to Heidi and becomes more caring towards her.

Peter becomes Heidi's best friend and often accompanies her on her adventures in the mountains. Heidi also befriends Klara (Monique Hore), a wealthy and privileged young girl who is confined to a wheelchair due to an accident. Despite their different backgrounds, Heidi and Klara become fast friends, and Heidi teaches her the beauty of the outdoors.

Throughout the series, viewers are also introduced to other characters who live in the village, including the local school teacher (Kate Fitzpatrick) who takes Heidi under her wing and helps her with her studies. There are also moments of tension between the residents of the village, particularly between Heidi's grandfather and the wealthy landowner Herr Sesemann (Andrew McFarlane), who Klara's father works for.

One of the standout features of the series is the stunning scenery of the Alps. The show's setting is simply breathtaking, and the beauty of the mountains is captured wonderfully in each episode. Grandfather has finished the Devil's Bridge and the whole village is ready to celebrate. Dete and Sebastian are here for the event, but Dete and Grandfather are at loggerheads, still disagreeing on what happened with Heidi when Dete took her to Frankfurt.

Mr Sesemann comes to Drfli with Grandmamma for a visit. When he sees them, Peter thinks they're after him for breaking the wheelchair and he decides to run away. At the cabin, everyone's happiness (as Mr Sesemann and Grandmamma have seen Clara walk) is short-lived when Brigitte arrives and tells them that Peter is gone. They all look for Peter and Heidi finds him in the treehouse.

37. The Wheelchair

Peter is jealous of Clara, as Heidi now spends most of her time with her. Heidi makes things worse when she innocently shows Peter's treehouse to Clara as they walk in the woods with Grandfather. She doesn't know Peter saw it all from the treehouse. Angry and jealous, Peter steals Clara's wheelchair in the cabin and throws it down the creek, where it breaks.

36. Friedrich

While Clara walks better and better as Heidi helps her train, Miss Rottenmeier meets Friedrich in town, her hometown sweetheart. Refusing to accept her past, Miss Rottenmeier pretends she doesn't know Friedrich and when he finds work with Grandfather at the bridge and settles at the cabin with them, Miss Rottenmeier decides to leave with Clara for Frankfurt.

The council comes to Grandfather to ask him to finish building the Devil's Bridge that he started six years ago and stopped when Tobias had his accident. Grandfather can't really refuse. But when he starts working on the bridge, memories come back to him and he starts having nightmares.

34. The Storm

Clara and Miss Rottenmeier now live at the cabin with Heidi and Grandfather. While Miss Rottenmeier goes to the village to get some supply, Grandfather takes Clara and Heidi to the mountains to see marmots. When she comes back, Miss Rottenmeier finds the cabin empty and she decides to go after the others in the mountains. She soon gets lost as a storm is brooming over the mountains.

33. Goats Hour

Clara arrives in Drfli for a visit, which is great, but she comes with Miss Rottenmeier, which is not so great for Heidi. They both stay at the Manor as Miss Rottenmeier refuses to live at the cabin (not suitable and not comfortable enough). Heidi and Clara really want to spend as much time as possible together, so they plan to force Miss Rottenmeier to accept to move to the cabin.

32. Scavenger Hunt

Mr Traber has taken a new teacher position in another village and will leave Drfli with Karl. Before he leaves, Karl decides to leave his collection of fossils behind and he organises a scavenger hunt for his friends to get his fossils; the first one to find the box will own the collection.

31. The School Test

May 9, 2015

Mr Traber, the teacher, organizes a test at school for the end of term. Karl, Theresa, William and Peter have to pass it, but not Heidi, as she is in the small section. The best student will receive a book and a coin. Theresa wants to beat Peter, who is now a good student, thanks to Heidi's help and advice from her time in Frankfurt with Grandmamma.

30. The Brooch

Grandmother is sick and needs expensive medication. Peter and Brigitte don't have enough money and Heidi really wants to help. When she finds a family heirloom in the Manor, a brooch that belonged to Ana, Grandfather's wife, she thinks her only solution is to exchange it for Grandmother's medication.

29. The Broken Statue

Heidi and Grandfather move to the Manor just before winter so Heidi can go to school. People in the village are not too happy about that, especially the Kellers, who are still cross with Grandfather because they couldn't buy his property. Mrs Keller refuses to sell Grandfather any supply and Grandfather is upset about it.

28. A New Goat in the Herd

Heidi is back in the meadow with Peter and the goats. She couldn't be happier, especially when Peter asks her to fulfil her duty as Goat General. Meanwhile, Karl gets in trouble and falls into a shaft near the Devil's Bridge and needs the urgent help of Peter. William fetches Peter and Peter has to leave Heidi with the herd up in the meadow.

Heidi leaves Clara and takes the train from Frankfurt to Drfli with Sebastian. Heidi beams at the prospect of seeing Grandfather and Peter again, unaware that exactly at the same time, in Drfli, Grandfather, who hasn't received Heidi's letter, is packing his bags to move back to Italy and take the train to Mayenfeld to sell the Manor to the Kellers.

Heidi is eagerly waiting for Grandfather's reply but no letter comes for her. This distresses her so much that she starts to faint every now and then. Everybody is worried and the doctor says that she should avoid to be reminded of the mountains for a while or be sent back to the mountains.

As summer comes, Heidi feels like a bird in a cage. She misses the mountains more than ever before and doesn't sleep well. At the same time, Miss Rottenmeier, who was working late at night in the library, hears noises and convinces herself that they have a ghost in the house. Her allegations scare Clara slightly and Mr Sesemann decides to stand guard the following night to clear the air.

24. A Tree for Shelter

Clara can now stand without any help and it's a great achievement. Heidi thinks she'll soon be able to go back to the mountains, but Mr Sesemann wants Heidi to stay anyway; he wants to adopt her. When Heidi understands that it means for her to spend the rest of her life in the city, she finds shelter up the big tree in the courtyard.

23. The Resignation

May 1, 2015

Heidi is about to take the baby goat back to the park when Miss Rottenmeier comes back earlier than expected and finds the goat in the house. It's too much for the governess and she decides to resign and leave the house. Clara is distraught and Heidi knows that there is only one way to keep Miss Rottenmeier: for her to leave. So she runs away, hoping to get back to the mountains.

22. Goats in the City

Miss Rottenmeier has to leave town to see her sick sister and Dete and Sebastian are left in charge (Grandmamma had to leave too). Heidi convinces them to take her and Clara back to the park. At the park, Heidi and Clara see some goats in an enclosure and Heidi notices that one of the baby goats is sick and needs attention.

21. Clara Stands

April 29, 2015

Grandmamma and Heidi are worried about Clara; since she fell in the park, she doesn't want to leave her room anymore. Heidi and Grandmamma try to cheer her up and even builds a swing in the garden (off the biggest tree) so they can play together. But when Heidi tries to push Clara on the swing, Clara rebuffs her and the two girls argue.

20. At the Park

By the end of winter, Heidi knows how to read. To celebrate, Grandmamma takes her and Clara to the park for a stroll. Also, Clara has made progress and can almost stand on her own. But she's still frail and she feels discouraged every time she tries and doesn't succeed. At the park, the girls meet Rudy and soon Heidi and Rudy run around trying to catch butterflies.

The arrival of Mr Sesemann's mother, "Grandmamma", a colourful old lady and an actress, changes the atmosphere at the Sesemann household. She decides to perform a play with Heidi and Clara. Grandmamma also immediately dislikes the teacher, thinking he's too academic for Heidi to blossom.

Clara's teacher comes back after the holidays, and he also has to teach Heidi. But he realizes that she doesn't even know how to read and write. When the girls are threatened to have separate classes, which means they won't see each other at all during the day, Clara helps Heidi learn her alphabet.

17. Papa Returns

April 25, 2015

Heidi helps Clara as she trains to stand from her wheelchair. When the girls learn that Mr Sesemann, Clara's father, will arrive later that day, Clara is motivated to show her progress. But an accident just as Mr Sesemann arrives gets Heidi in trouble and Clara is afraid her new friend will be sent away. To soothe her father's anger, she decides to leave the house to get his favourite cake.

16. The Promise

April 24, 2015

Miss Rottenmeier is allergic to cats and when she discovers the two kittens brought by Heidi, she gets really angry. She punishes Heidi and forces her to spend the afternoon in the cellar while she sends Sebastian to drown the kittens in the canal. To save the kittens, Clara helps Heidi getting out of the cellar and Heidi runs after Sebastian for him not to drown the kittens.

15. The Bell Tower

April 23, 2015

Heidi wants to see the mountains. She decides to go up the bell tower at the cathedral and asks Clara to cover for her during nap time. But Heidi comes back later than expected, and she only avoid Miss Rottenmeier's anger thanks to Sebastian, the butler, who pretends she was asleep in the attic.

In Frankfurt, Clara Sesemann, a young girl in a wheelchair, waits impatiently for her new companion; Heidi. But when Heidi arrives at the Sesemann's house, Miss Rottenmeier, the governess in charge, wants to make sure that Heidi is suitable for Clara before she can meet the young girl.

13. The End of Spring

As Heidi takes her last test to become Goat General, Dete arrives in Drfli to take Heidi to Frankfurt to work in the family where she works too. Grandfather refuses to let her go and he has a fight with Dete. Dete reminds him of what happened to Tobias, Grandfather's son and Heidi's father. This is too much for Grandfather, who agrees to let Dete do whatever she wants.

12. Save Sweetheart

April 20, 2015

Peter and Heidi are back in the meadows and Heidi is now so good with the goats that she asks Peter to become a Goat General just like him. But Peter refuses, as he feels sad today; Sweetheart doesn't give milk anymore (since she was almost attacked by the wolf in #9) and the Kellers have decided to get rid of the goat.

11. Attack the Treehouse

One afternoon, Karl contemplates Peter's treehouse (William has lead him and Theresa there) and he decides to attack it. But it's too dangerous while Peter and Heidi are in the treehouse. So Theresa has an idea; and the next morning, Karl, Theresa and William invade the treehouse before Heidi and Peter arrive. When they realize that, Peter and Heidi are furious, and Peter wants to fight.

10. Peter's Treasure

Spring is back and Peter and Heidi are ready to reopen the treehouse, which had been closed all winter. But Peter realizes that his treasure, that he kept in the shed near his cabin, has disappeared. Sure it's Karl and Theresa again, he rushes to the village with Heidi. But as usual, Karl and Theresa deny any involvement.

9. Beware of the Wolf

A she-wolf wanders in the village and almost attacks Sweetheart, Theresa's goat. Mr Keller, Theresa's father, organizes a hunt in the woods with the blacksmith. The teacher, who thinks, instead of killing the wolf, they should find out why she's there in the first place, goes with them. In the meantime, Heidi finds a cub in the woods. She thinks it's a puppy and doesn't realize it's a wolf cub.

8. Trapped in the Manor

Winter has arrived and now Heidi is stuck in the cabin. She asks Grandfather to go to the village to see Peter after school. Grandfather agrees and she goes down to the village on Grandfather's sled. She peers inside the classroom and observes Peter. After school, Peter and Heidi are attacked with snowballs by Karl and Theresa, who blame Peter for having being punished by the teacher.

7. For a Loaf of Bread

As winter is approaching, Grandfather and Heidi go to the village to get supplies for the cold season. As she stops at Peter's place, Heidi realizes that Grandmother's favorite thing is fresh bread. But the old woman can't afford to buy some every day so Heidi promises Grandmother to bring some back.

After Peter tells her how much he hates school and how unbearable it is, Heidi is scared that Grandfather will force her to go to school next winter. At the same time, Grandfather receives a letter from Dete saying that she'll come back next spring to take Heidi away. Grandfather is upset and clams up when Heidi asks him if she'll have to go to school.

5. The Treehouse Oath

The next day, Peter is convinced Heidi saw his treehouse and he sulks. He decides to go to the meadow on his own and Heidi is left with Grandfather. They both go to the blacksmith in the village, where Heidi surprises Karl and his gang as they plan to find and attack Peter's treehouse. Concerned, Heidi runs in the woods to find Peter.

4. Save Chippy

A few days later, Heidi saves a goldfinch from a jackdaw's attack but the goldfinch is wounded. Against Grandfather's advice, Heidi decides to save the wounded bird and she needs Peter's help for that. At his place, Peter is gone for the day in the woods and Heidi meets Peter's Grandmother, an old and blind woman. She tells Heidi she can save the bird with Artemisia, a mountain herb.

2. First Day in the Mountains

Grandfather has asked Peter, who he calls "Goat General", to take Heidi with him for the day. Peter is not happy about this decision but doesn't have much of a choice. So Heidi spends her first day in the mountains with Peter, who is still not talking to her, not very happy at having to take care of the "town girl".

Led by her Aunt Dete, Heidi arrives in the village of Drfli to live with Uncle, her grandfather. On the train taking them to Drfli, Heidi meets Drfli's grocer, Mrs Keller and her daughter Theresa. She hears about her grandfather for the first time and the depiction is somewhat scary.
