As the Heroes' first season continues to ramp up, episode 12, "Godsend," revolves primarily around Hiro's efforts to save the life of his father, who's in peril in feudal Japan, and Claire dealing with the ramifications of her father's decision to have her erased from her adoptive mother's memory.

Hiro's story is told two-fold: in one timeline, he's in feudal Japan, where his father -- previously thought to be dead -- is revealed to be alive, but in trouble with the dangerous warrior Takezo Kensei. Meanwhile, in the present day, Hiro and Ando are determined to solve the mystery of Kensei's true identity, and Hiro hopes to save his father from harm before returning to the future. As for Claire, she finds herself erased from the mind of her adoptive mother, a chilling and isolating experience that leaves her struggling to figure out what to do next.

Through these two storylines, "Godsend" underscores the many emotional journeys that these characters can go through, and how they're all different -- even characters as seemingly similar as Hiro and Claire. For Hiro, the show continues to explore his lovable, quirky personality as he attempts to reconcile his future-self's identity with his father's story in the past. He's buoyed, as usual, by Ando's support and friendship, and his determination to save his father, who he never knew was alive.

Claire, meanwhile, is pushed into an entirely different story than what she's faced before. Her father's decision to erase her memory from her adoptive mother is intensely unsettling, and the episode portrays the eerie quietness of her house almost too well. Actress Hayden Panettiere does an expert job of portraying Claire's emotional journey as she tries to navigate the consequences of this decision, and it's heartbreaking to see the confused and hurt reactions of her formerly doting mother.

As usual, "Godsend" balances these two central stories with intriguing developments for the rest of the ensemble cast. Mohinder Suresh continues to investigate his father's death, and finds an unexpected ally in Eden. Meanwhile, Peter Petrelli struggles to come to terms with his new powers, which he can't quite control yet. And Niki, after a brief absence from the previous episode, is back and dealing with the aftermath of her husband's discovery of her split personality.

Overall, "Godsend" is a taut episode that really emphasizes the growth of its characters and the emotional stakes at play. While there are elements of action to keep the plot moving forward -- Hiro's brave showdown with Kensei and Peter's destructive wake-up call, for example -- the show is smart to spend most of its time on the psychological journeys of its ensemble.

By the end of the episode, viewers are left eager to see how these stories will continue to develop as the season moves forward. What's next for Hiro and Ando? Can Claire ever reconcile with her mother? Will Niki lose her fight with her darker half? And most importantly, what is Kensei's true identity? These questions, and more, will keep audiences hooked as the show continues to explore the heroes' journey in all its complexity.
