In Homicide Hunter season 1 episode 6, Chance Encounter, Lt. Joe Kenda investigates the murder of a young woman found strangled in a Colorado Springs motel room. The victim, identified as Mary Anne Higgs, was a 22-year-old mother of a toddler. Her body was discovered by a housekeeper who went to clean the room after the victim's estranged husband, David Higgs, checked out.
Kenda and his team quickly learn that Mary Anne had a complicated love life, having recently separated from David Higgs and had been dating multiple men. Their investigation leads them to two suspects, including Mary Anne's recent boyfriend, Danny Cordial, who has a criminal past, and a man named Richard Delaney who was seen leaving the motel around the time of the murder.
As Kenda delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Mary Anne had been living life on the edge, using drugs and putting herself in dangerous situations. He also uncovers a potentially incriminating phone call between Danny Cordial and Richard Delaney. Despite the evidence, neither suspect is willing to give up any information.
Kenda and his team rely on forensic evidence to tie one of the suspects to the crime scene. However, when they catch him, he denies any involvement in the murder. It appears as though they have reached a dead end in the investigation until Kenda receives a lucky break. A chance encounter with a witness leads him down a new path, and he finally finds the evidence he needs to solve the case.
Despite the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding Mary Anne Higgs' death, Kenda and his team ensured that her killer was brought to justice. In this episode, viewers see Kenda's dedication to solving his cases and his unwavering commitment to justice.
