Ep 111. New Jobs and Roommates in Madrid, Spain

  • September 19, 2014

A couple from New York, Alex and Rachel, have just relocated to Madrid, Spain for new jobs and are seeking an apartment to rent. They are looking for a place that is in a central location, is walkable, and has a local neighborhood feel. Additionally, they are hoping to find a two-bedroom apartment to accommodate a roommate. For Alex, it is important to have a space to work from home, while Rachel is looking forward to having a balcony to enjoy the Spanish weather.

Their real estate agent, Lucy, is tasked with finding them the perfect apartment that meets all their needs. The first apartment they visit is a two-bedroom apartment in the vibrant neighborhood of Lavapiés. The apartment has an open plan living area, a modern kitchen, and a balcony with a view of the street. While the apartment meets their needs, they are uncertain about the neighborhood being too lively.

Next, they visit a two-bedroom apartment in the popular neighborhood of Malasaña. The apartment is located above a busy café and has an open-plan living area, two balconies, and a small extra room, perfect for Alex's home office. However, there is no elevator, which may be an issue for their potential roommate, and the apartment is slightly over budget.

Lucy then takes them to a two-bedroom apartment in the more residential neighborhood of Chamberí. The apartment has a spacious living room, a balcony with a view, and a relatively quiet location. Rachel enjoys the quietness and considers it ideal for living, while Alex notes that it's a bit further from the city center.

Finally, they visit a two-bedroom apartment in the neighborhood of La Latina. The apartment has a cozy living room, two balconies, and overlooks the plaza. The location is ideal for enjoying the city's cultural scene, but the apartment's interior is a bit older than the couple expected. The apartment's small bedroom also may not be a suitable match for their future roommate.

After visiting all the apartments, Alex and Rachel ultimately decide to choose the apartment in Malasaña. Despite being over budget and the lack of elevator, they believe the apartment has the best space arrangement for their living needs and a great location that allows them to explore the city easily.

With Lucy's assistance, they negotiate a rent agreement with the apartment owner and are thrilled to finally have found their new home in Madrid.
