Intrigue in the Bakumatsu is an anime series produced by SUNRISE, set during the end of the Bakumatsu era in Japan. The show follows a group of eclectic individuals who join forces to uncover a conspiracy that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of society. The protagonist of the series is a young man named Takasugi Shinsuke, voiced by Daisuke Namikawa. Takasugi is a former samurai and member of the Shinsengumi, a group of elite warriors tasked with protecting the Shogunate government. However, Takasugi has grown disillusioned with the government's corruption and oppression, leading him to join the rebellion against it. He joins forces with several other historical figures, including Katsura Kogoro, voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue, and Sakamoto Ryoma, voiced by Junichi Suwabe.

The group's mission is to stop a shadowy organization known as the Loyalist Party, which seeks to overthrow the Shogunate and install a new government led by foreigners. The Loyalist Party maintains its power by controlling the shogun, Yoshinobu, and using him as a puppet to carry out their bidding. Yoshinobu's sister, Princess Kazu, becomes aware of this conspiracy and enlists the help of Takasugi and his comrades to stop it. Along the way, they encounter numerous other historical figures, including Hijikata Toshizo, voiced by Kenji Nomura, and Okita Soji, voiced by Takashi Nagasako.

The show blends historical fact with fiction, creating a compelling story full of intrigue and action. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, and their struggles are grounded in historical reality, making the story feel all the more poignant. The period setting is also meticulously researched, with intricate attention paid to the elaborate costumes and settings.

Despite the historical backdrop, the show is not afraid to delve into fantasy and myth. Takasugi and his comrades possess supernatural abilities, such as the power to control fire or transform into a tiger. These mystical elements add a layer of excitement to the story, and are seamlessly woven into the narrative.

The animation in Intrigue in the Bakumatsu is top-notch, with SUNRISE's signature fluid animation and eye-popping visuals. The battle scenes are particularly impressive, with dynamic camera work and a sense of urgency that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

The voice acting is also stellar, with a cast of industry veterans bringing their A-game. Daisuke Namikawa imbues Takasugi with a sense of vulnerability and steely determination, while Kazuhiko Inoue gives Katsura a sense of gravity and wisdom. Junichi Suwabe is perfectly cast as Sakamoto Ryoma, with his suave yet dangerous demeanor.

Intrigue in the Bakumatsu is a must-watch for fans of historical drama, action, and fantasy. The show expertly weaves together a complex plot filled with fascinating characters and high-stakes drama. Despite its historical setting, the themes of the show remain relevant today, exploring issues of power, corruption, and loyalty. The show is a true masterpiece of storytelling and animation, and one that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers.
