Kurozuka is a 2008 anime series that tells the story of Kuro, a young man who has been alive for over a thousand years. The series is based on a manga series of the same name by Baku Yumemakura. The story revolves around Kuro and his encounter with a mysterious woman, Kuromitsu. Kuro is a samurai who lived during the Heian period in Japan, but he was transformed into an immortal being after drinking the blood of a red spider lily. Kuromitsu is a beautiful woman who also has the same secret as Kuro. As they travel together, Kuro begins to discover more about the world he lives in and the power that he possesses.

The series takes place in both the past and the future. The past is where Kuro and Kuromitsu's story begins, as they travel through different time periods, constantly being hunted by their enemies, the Red Army. The Red Army is a group of warriors who are dedicated to ending the immortal life of Kuro and Kuromitsu.

As the story moves forward, the setting shifts to the year 2400. In this future world, Kuro meets a woman named Saniwa, who is a scientist trying to find a cure for the deadly disease that has plagued the world. Kuro agrees to help her in her research, but he is also drawn into a battle against a new enemy, the Taishakuten. The Taishakuten is an organization that seeks to use the power of immortals like Kuro and Kuromitsu to take control of the world.

Throughout the series, the characters face several challenges as they try to survive in a world that is constantly changing. Kuro must come to terms with his immortality and the fact that he has outlived his loved ones. Kuromitsu, on the other hand, must confront her own past and the secrets that she has been hiding for centuries.

The series features an impressive voice cast that includes Romi Paku as Kuromitsu, Mamoru Miyano as Kuro, Kazuhiko Inoue as Benkei, Keiji Fujiwara as Yoshitsune, Toshiko Fujita as Saniwa, Jouji Nakata as Shiranui, Miyu Irino as Shouichi and Houko Kuwashima as Rai. Toru Ohkawa and Takashi Matsuyama also make appearances in the series.

The animation style of Kurozuka is dark and gritty, which complements the story's themes of violence, love and betrayal. The fight scenes are intense and well choreographed, making them some of the most memorable moments in the series. The use of blood and gore in the series is also noteworthy, as it adds to the overall atmosphere of the story.

One of the strengths of Kurozuka is its exploration of the themes of immortality and the consequences that come with it. Kuro and Kuromitsu are both cursed with immortality, and while it may seem like a blessing, it is actually a curse that has made them outcasts from society. The series also touches on themes of love and betrayal, as Kuro and Kuromitsu's relationship is tested throughout the series.

Overall, Kurozuka is a must-watch for fans of action, romance and science-fiction. The series manages to blend all these genres together seamlessly, resulting in a compelling story that will keep audiences engaged from start to finish. The series may not be for everyone, as it contains mature themes and graphic violence, but for those who can handle it, Kurozuka is a treat.
