Last Exile is a science fiction anime series that was originally released in 2003. The show is produced by animation studio Gonzo and was directed by Koichi Chigira. The story takes place in a world that is divided into two factions; the Anatoray and Disith. The two factions are in a constant state of war and they are fighting over control of the planet's natural resources.

The story follows two childhood friends, Claus Valca and Lavie Head, who live in the Anatoray faction. They both dream of one day becoming pilots and flying the legendary aircraft, the vanship. Their dream becomes a reality when they are hired by a man named Alex Rowe, the captain of the Silvana, a massive airship that is part of the Anatoray's military. Claus and Lavie are tasked with completing various missions for the Anatoray, which often involve fighting against the Disith.

Throughout the series, Claus and Lavie meet a variety of interesting characters, including Sky Pirates, soldiers, and even members of the royal family. They also learn about a mysterious force that is at the center of the conflict between the Anatoray and Disith factions, which eventually leads to a climax that ties together all of the story's loose ends.

Last Exile features an impressive cast of voice actors, including Bob Papenbrook (as Alex Rowe), Crispin Freeman (as Dio Eraclea), Jamieson Price (as Lucciola), Johnny Yong Bosch (as Claus Valca), Joshua Seth (as Mullin Shetland), Kari Wahlgren (as Lavie Head), Mayumi Asano (as Tatiana Wisla), Mela Lee (as Holly Mad-thane), Junko Noda (as Gita Ral), Wakana Yamazaki (as Sophia Forrester), Natsuko Kuwatani (as Alvis Hamilton), Toshiyuki Morikawa (as Vincent Alzey), Tomoe Hanba (as Dio's sister), Michiko Neya (as Tatiana's sister), Eri Kitamura (as Sārā Augusta), Shinichiro Miki (as Emperor Lescius), and Paul St. Peter (as Hamilcar Valca).

The animation in Last Exile is impressive, with highly detailed character designs and expansive landscapes. The aircrafts in the show draw inspiration from real-life WWII era planes, giving the show a unique and distinct look. The soundtrack of the show was composed by Hitomi Kuroishi, who also composed the music for Code Geass and many other anime series.

One of the strongest aspects of Last Exile is its storytelling. The show does an excellent job of weaving together various plot threads and character arcs to create a cohesive and engaging narrative. The pacing of the show is also well done, with moments of intense action balanced out by quieter character moments. The show also deals with themes such as war, politics, and the value of friendship and loyalty.

In conclusion, Last Exile is a must-watch for fans of science fiction and action anime. Its engaging story, impressive animation, and talented voice cast make it a standout series. The show's blend of intense action and quieter character moments create a well-rounded and enjoyable viewing experience.

Last Exile is a series that is currently running and has 2 seasons (66 episodes). The series first aired on April 7, 2003.
