Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, now both in their 70s, both retired, and both widowed, are reunited after being convinced to join Facebook by their grandchildren. After their encounter, Alan and Celia find that they're still as in love as they were as teenagers in the 1950s. They become engaged and make plans to be married.

The couple's story is not the only one told in this series. Alan's daughter Gillian holds a part-time job in a supermarket and runs a farm. She is a widow; her abusive husband died several years ago. She's been struggling simply to stay afloat ever since. Though she's happy for her father, she's worried about what might happen to her son when Alan leaves and takes the support he's been providing with him.

Celia's daughter is Gillian's polar opposite. Caroline is an Oxford graduate who leads a successful career as a headmistress. Caroline is not without her problems, however. Her husband John recently left her for someone else. Now he's back and wants a second chance. Meanwhile, Caroline is struggling with depression and strange feelings for a female coworker.
