MacGyver is an American action-adventure television series that aired from 1985 to 1992 on ABC. The show starred Richard Dean Anderson as the titular character, Angus MacGyver, a covert operative for the Phoenix Foundation. MacGyver was a unique character in that he was able to use his intelligence and problem-solving skills to get out of dangerous situations, rather than resorting to violence.

The show was known for its inventive and sometimes outlandish solutions to complex problems. MacGyver often used household items like paperclips, duct tape, and rubber bands to create gadgets and contraptions that helped him solve problems and defeat his enemies. This creativity and resourcefulness endeared the character to audiences, and made MacGyver one of the most popular action heroes of the 1980s.

The show also had a great supporting cast. Dana Elcar played MacGyver's boss, Pete Thornton, and served as a mentor and father figure to the resourceful agent. Bruce McGill played Jack Dalton, MacGyver's best friend and fellow adventurer, who often got the two of them into trouble with his risky schemes. Meanwhile, Michael Des Barres played Murdoc, MacGyver's nemesis and a master of disguise who was always trying to kill the agent.

Other memorable recurring characters included Traci Lords as a former CIA agent who turned to crime, Clive Revill as an eccentric millionaire who hired MacGyver for various jobs, and Daniel Davis as a British spy who often assisted MacGyver on missions. Kristian Alfonso played a love interest for MacGyver, while Tia Carrere played a villainous arms dealer who tangled with the agent multiple times.

The show also featured a number of celebrity guest stars, including Audrey Landers, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Donald Gibb, Marion Ross, Peggy Rea, John Saint Ryan, Deborah Foreman, Vladimir Kulich, Larry Wilcox, John Pyper-Ferguson, Colm Meaney, John M. Jackson, Steven Keats, Nana Visitor, Vincent Schiavelli, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Jeff Kober, George Cheung, Cliff Potts, Richard Hatch, Paul Koslo, Deborah Adair, Judith Chapman, and James Kidnie.

Throughout its seven-season run, MacGyver tackled a variety of different missions and challenges. From rescuing hostages to uncovering government conspiracies, MacGyver was always willing to put himself in harm's way to do the right thing. The show was known for its high tension, action-packed scenes, and clever plot twists that kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

Despite its success, MacGyver was not without controversy. The show's use of violence and its sometimes unrealistic solutions to problems drew criticism from some quarters. However, its popularity led to a number of spin-off shows and TV movies, and it has remained a cult favorite among fans of the action-adventure genre.

In conclusion, MacGyver was a groundbreaking television show that introduced audiences to a new kind of action hero. Its inventive solutions to complex problems, resourceful protagonist, and memorable supporting cast made it one of the most beloved shows of the 1980s. Its legacy continues to this day, and it remains a testament to the enduring appeal of tough, intelligent action heroes.

MacGyver is a series that is currently running and has 7 seasons (142 episodes). The series first aired on September 29, 1985.
