Laharl is awakened from a two-year slumber by his vassal, Etna, who informs him that his father, the previous Netherworld Overlord, has died. Laharl sets out to claim his birthright as the new Overlord, but he quickly learns that he must first prove himself by defeating anyone who opposes him.

Throughout the series, Laharl is joined by a motley crew of characters, including Flonne, an angel who is sent to the Netherworld to assassinate the Overlord but ends up becoming Laharl's ally; Captain Gordon, a space hero who is on a mission to save the universe and mistakenly believes that Laharl is the "Dark Adonis" he has been searching for; and Jennifer, the princess of a human kingdom who is forced to flee her own country.

As Laharl and his companions embark on their journey, they face a variety of challenges, including rival demon lords, power-hungry angels, and intergalactic invaders. Along the way, they also learn valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and what it truly means to be a leader.
