After Dr. Hawkins, played by Carl Lumbly, is shot during a riot in Port Columbia, left paralyzed, and later loses his lawsuit against the corrupt cop who shot him, he uses his considerable resources to create a powered exoskeleton. This suit not only restores Hawkins' ability to walk, but enhances his abilities to superhuman performance levels.

Inspired to defeat evil, Dr. Hawkins establishes a secret lab, a hovercraft, and even takes up the heroic name of M.A.N.T.I.S., which stands for Mechanically Augmented Neuro-Transmitter Interception System. As the series progressed, M.A.N.T.I.S. would serve as a vigilante, battling the corrupt businessman Solomon Box, played by Andrew Jordt "Andy" Robinson, while evading the police. Midway through the series, more fantastical elements including clones, mad scientists, and even time travel are introduced, with the series concluding on a potential replacement for the M.A.N.T.I.S. exoskeleton suit.

M.A.N.T.I.S. is a live-action, science-fiction television series. It lasted a single series of twenty-two 44 minute-long episodes, and originally aired on Fox's prime time programming block.
