On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 took off from Chicago O'Hare International Airport en route to Los Angeles International Airport. However, just moments after takeoff, the left engine and pylon assembly separated from the aircraft, causing the plane to roll and crash into an open field. All 258 passengers and 13 crew members onboard were killed, as well as two people on the ground.

As investigators sift through the wreckage, they quickly realize the severity of the situation. The engine and pylon assembly had not only separated from the plane, but had also torn away a section of the wing, causing a catastrophic loss of control. What could have caused this seemingly inexplicable failure?

The investigation leads to the discovery of a maintenance procedure that may have inadvertently contributed to the accident. With this revelation, investigators delve deeper into the maintenance records of the plane, searching for any other irregularities or mistakes that could have played a role in the disaster. Meanwhile, they also examine the design and manufacturing of the engine and pylon assembly, in an effort to determine if any inherent flaws or weaknesses could have contributed to their failure.

As the investigation unfolds, tensions rise and blame begins to be assigned. The maintenance crew is scrutinized, as well as the aircraft manufacturer and the airlines themselves. Ultimately, a combination of factors may have played a role in the accident, from mistakes made during maintenance to design flaws in the engine and pylon assembly.

The episode provides a gripping look into the investigation of the worst aviation disaster in American history at that time, highlighting the painstaking work of the investigators as they seek to uncover the cause of the tragedy. Through interviews with aviation experts and members of the investigation team, viewers come to understand the complex repairs and maintenance that keep planes in the air, as well as the intricate processes involved in investigating an air disaster.

Overall, Missing Over New York is a fascinating and tragic look at a devastating event, and a potent reminder of the importance of safety in aviation.
