As the episode "They Shoot Mothers, Don't They?" begins, Sydney is excited to spend time with her mom--until she realizes that it's Mother's Day. Sydney's mother shows up with her boyfriend and immediately starts to criticize Sydney. Meanwhile, Jake and Jo are having a tough time with their newly adopted baby boy, who won't stop crying. Jo is exhausted and Jake has to go back to work, so they hire a nanny to take care of the baby.

At the same time, Jane is busy working on a fashion show and is stressed out about it. She gets even more stressed when she finds out that her controlling mother is coming into town for Mother's Day. Amanda has to deal with her own mother issues as well when she gets a phone call from her estranged mother, who is coming to visit.

As the day goes on, tension builds between Sydney and her mother, and Jake and Jo struggle to bond with their baby. Amanda's mother causes friction between her and Billy, and Jane's mother meddles in her business. Sydney's mother decides to leave early, and Sydney is left feeling hurt and disappointed once again.

Eventually, Jane's fashion show goes off without a hitch, and Jake and Jo come to a realization about their son--he just wants to be held. Amanda's mother ends up canceling her visit, leaving Billy relieved. As for Sydney, she decides to make the best of Mother's Day by going out with her friends.

Overall, "They Shoot Mothers, Don't They?" deals with the complicated relationships between mothers and their adult children. Each storyline touches on a different aspect of this dynamic, from Sydney's desire to please her mother to Amanda's struggle with forgiveness. While the episode does contain some lighthearted moments, it also deals with some serious and emotional issues.
